While the setting may be Southern, the themes are universal as the “ladies” in this eighteen-story collection search for family, home, and their own authentic selves. Based in South Carolina’s and Georgia’s Lowcountry, the main characters range in age from eighteen to eighty. But, whether they live in the grand homes of Charleston, Beaufort and Savannah or in the ramshackle hamlets that dot Highway 17, each of the characters find that it’s often the low places in life that create the best foundation from which to move forward.
Author Mary Ann Henry, who will be signing at Blue Bicycle Books on September 9, explains, “I wanted to write stories that are uniquely southern and female. Some of the characters are quirky or eccentric; a couple are tragic; many are downright funny; but all, I think, are brave in their own way.”
From a high school girl who gets into trouble when she creates the cyber identity of Nouveau Southern Floozy – to a middle aged housewife who doesn’t learn about love until her husband moves into a tree house in the backyard – each character has something to say about surviving and thriving in the face of challenges.
Henry has previously published short stories in literary reviews. She currently teaches writing workshops and serves as a mentor and writing coach for the Lowcountry Writers’ Retreat in Folly Beach, South Carolina.
