The Charleston-based organization, People Against Rape (PAR) is seeking submissions for a poetry competition designed to help raise awareness about the need to speak out against sexual violence. With the theme of “Shatter the Silence. Stop the Violence”, poets are invited to submit a one page poem, copyright free only, of no more than 32 lines, to the competition. The winning poem or poems will included in our online newsletter and will be read by the poet(s) at the Annual Take Back the Night event, to be held this year at Brittlebank Park at 6pm on Thursday, April 4, 2013.
One out of every five women, nationally, is sexually assaulted by a partner, relative, friend, employer, colleague or stranger. This does not include the number of men and boys sexually assaulted annually. Less than 20% of these are reported to law enforcement. The importance of raising awareness for victims of these crimes cannot be over-stated. Take Back the Night has become internationally known as a way to take a stand against sexual violence. Its mission to end sexual assault has become a beacon of hope to survivors around the world. Won’t you help us?
For submissions please send the poem in an attachment (RTF or DOC) to: firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also contact this address for more information.
Please include your name, address, phone, email and title of the Poem ONLY in the email. Do not leave any identification on the attached poem. Deadline for submissions has been extended to March 30, 013.
